Which skip should I hire for domestic clearouts?

Which skip should I hire for domestic renovations?

Hiring a skip or container for the first time can be a bit of a baffling experience. What size do you need? How much will it cost? What do you need to do to get one? We get it.

Here on the Skip Hire Network blog, we’re all about making skip hire simple. This week, we’re looking at the kinds of skips you’ll need for domestic renovations – house, shed, garage, garden: you get the picture!

What kind of domestic work can I use a skip for?

Put simply, pretty much any. If you’re renovating a room or your whole house, clearing out pre-move or post-bereavement, or having your garden hauled over and landscaped, hiring a skip can be an effective way to get through the job a whole lot quicker – much more effective than repeated trips to the tip.

As long as you’re chucking away some or any of the following, you’re good to go:

Quantity matters too: by law, your filled skip has to be what’s called a ‘level load’ – basically, nothing should be higher than the sides of the container.

Don’t be tempted to overfill – any reputable domestic skip hire service will either charge you for another skip and/or ask you to remove the items you’ve carefully balanced 10 feet high!

Which skip sizes are best for domestic use?

Our four-yard skip (about three feet high and six feet long) is the smallest size we offer, and that’s a great choice for single-room refits such as superficial kitchen and bathroom work. For slightly larger quantities of waste, our six- and eight-yard skips are a good alternative.

The next three sizes up are our 14, 16 and 20-yard skips, and unless you’re single-handedly tearing down a house, you’re not likely to need to go any bigger.

These latter three sizes are popular with customers undertaking several room renovations at once, large house clearances and major garden and landscaping work, sometimes with a garage or wall thrown in there, too.
