General FAQs
There are two types of skips – covered and open. Open skips are the most commonly used; however, covered skips, in which the contents are protected from weather conditions, can be arranged at extra cost.
The skip size you need depends on the type and volume of waste you’re disposing of. At Skip Hire Network, we offer a range of sizes – from mini skips for small household clearances to large builders’ skips for construction projects. Each size includes an approximate capacity guide to help you choose the right one.
The cost of your skip will vary based on your location, the skip size, and how long you need it for. We offer competitive, transparent pricing with no hidden fees. Use our online quote tool for an instant, tailored quote!
By law you must not over-fill your skip. To ensure the skip is safe to transport, it must not be filled past the top of the sides. Over-filled skips will not be taken under any circumstances.
If you are unsure you must ask the driver before you start to fill your skip.
Our standard hire period is up to 14 days – we provide this as standard. Each additional week is charged at a further £10 + VAT.
If the skip is placed on public land, such as a road or pavement, a permit is required. For skips placed on private property (like a driveway), no permit is needed. If you let us know, we can obtain the permit for you!
We would always recommend calling your local council and enquiring, giving them as much detail as possible, and they’ll be able to advise properly. As a rule of thumb, you won’t need to inform them, but if you need to have your skip placed on a public highway – like a pavement or street – you will need a permit. We can obtain this permit for you, if you let us know!
Waste & Recycling FAQs
Skips are used for the removal of non-hazardous waste such as building debris, household items, green waste, etc. If you need to dispose of hazardous waste, you need special permits and containers. It is illegal for you to mix hazardous waste with non-hazardous waste.
You may also request skips for scrap metal. These are available at a minimal cost, and sometimes even for free, depending on transportation costs and the volume of metal contained.
Below, you’ll find a list of ‘hazardous’ waste that is not accepted by Skip Hire Network. If you have any of these, please call us to arrange appropriate removal as this will require a special license and specific waste removal solution.
